Satisfaction with life quality of non-Korean Seoul residents is 6.89 o…

Many Non-Korean Seoul residents said their feeling about Seoul had been improved, but some still face discrimination and disdain.


The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced the results of the '2018 Seoul Survey' on May 8th, which identifies Seoul's changes and social phenomena such as the quality of life, housing, economy, culture, environment, transportation, education and welfare of Seoul citizens including foreigners.


The survey carried out on 20,000 households (42,991 people aged 15 and over) and 2,500 foreigners residing in Seoul in September 2018.


According to the survey, non-Korean respondents gave 6.89 out of 10 for satisfaction with life quality, which was 0.03 points higher from the previous year. The score of 'residential environment' (7.26) was highest, followed by ‘security’ (7.21), ‘economic environment’ (6.82), ‘welfare programs’ (6.82), ‘education environment’ (6.64), and 'social environment' (6.61) was lowest

(49.3%). Others answered 'not changed' (45.0%) and ‘deteriorated’ (5.6%). The main reason for the improvement was ‘personal respect for foreigners' (30.7%), and for their deterioration was 'personal ignorance and discrimination against foreigners' (44.5%).

32.3% of respondents answered they have not get any stress in past 2 weeks, while 38.6% have experienced stress because of ‘financial status’ (46.2%), ‘excessive workload or study’ (28.7%). (duplicate response)


46%of respondents live with parents/family and 29.5% live alone. And the respondents choose 'Convenient place for traffic' (66.1%) as the most important aspect, when selecting a residence. (duplicate response)


Seoul city government also surveyed Korean citizens in Seoul. 


Regarding perception of multicultural society, 44.3% of the Koreans agreed that the government needs policies to reduce social prejudice against marriage immigrants, and 33.4% also agreed it is needed to set better immigration policies to solve the population decline problem.


However, 41% of Korean respondents said the increase of immigration will bring conflicts with Koreans over jobs.
